While many users appreciate being able to receive text messages no matter which Apple device they’re using, a number of us may find the constant iMessage notifications while working on our Mac a bit distracting. If you feel the same way, here’s how to quickly turn off iMessage notifications on your Mac.
IMessages account on the Mac (in the Messages app) stores the iMessages in a Chat.db item. IF you dismiss a conversation from view (mouse over it and use the x that appears) the chat.db will supply the 'History' if and when you contact that person again. However it is worthwhile also creating a back up of some sort.
- Open the Messages app on your Mac.
- Click the Messages menu item in the Menu Bar, and click on “Preferences.”
- In the Messages Preferences window, click the “Accounts” tab.
- Click the account you wish to disable in the left pane, then click the “Enable this account” checkbox to clear it.
- Click the “Sign Out” button.
- One way Mac OS X differs from Windows is that when you close the last window, the app itself stays open. If you look at the Dock, you will still see a small dot underneath the app icon to indicate.
- And, you can set your Mac to allow phone calls (or repeated calls from anyone during a three minute period) while Do Not Disturb is on. That way, you’re just disabling notifications. Disable Banner Notifications For Any App. Maybe you don’t want to disable all notifications, but only those from a specific app. You can do that, too!
The above steps will completely turn off sending and receiving iMessages on your Mac. But what if you just want to turn off the constant notifications, and retain the ability to use Messages when you wish to?
Download macos mojave app. However, when Apple launched Mojave the Mac App Store changed, and these installers are no longer downloadable from the store - unless you are using an old version of macOS/macOS X.
- Click the Apple logo in the upper left hand corner of the Menu Bar of your Desktop.
- Click the “System preferences…” menu item.
- Click the “Notifications” icon in the System Preferences window.
- Select “Messages” in the left-hand pane.
- Click “None” for the “Messages alert style.”
Now, you won’t be bothered by Notifications for the Messages app, but will still be able to send and receive them on your Mac, as needed.
These are a few scenarios where someone might want to hide text messages on their iPhone.
- It could be that you’re planning something important with a friend or relative via text.
- You always unknowingly give friends access to your iPhone.
- Or most importantly, privacy is one of your biggest concerns.
Although many messaging apps for iOS promises better data storing, privacy problems remain as a primary issue. With that being said, why don’t we stick to the traditional SMS or iMessage and use one of the methods below?
Hide Messages from Showing in Lockscreen
Not sure if you noticed but whenever someone sends you a text message, it will popup on the lock screen along with an excerpt. It’s not long but has the potential to reveal some private information. Furthermore, quick reply is also included. If someone was able to get a hold of your iPhone, they could just swipe left on the notification and response.

Disable Show Previews in iOS
When this feature is turned off, you will continue to receive notification. But your incoming messages are now hidden.
- Go to Settings > Notifications > Messages
- Scroll down until you see the Include section
- Under it is Show Previews and it should be On by default
- Switch it to OFF and the button is no longer green
Hide Text Messages Alert from iOS Lock screen
If the above method doesn’t provide enough protection, what you can do is disable the entire messaging notification.
- Go back to the Messages app in your Settings app
- Look for Show on Lock Screen and turn it Off
- Disable “Badge App Icon” as well
New iMessage or regular SMS won’t pop up on your lock screen notification anymore.
